Sustainability

As conference organizers, we also have a social and environmental responsibility
We move hundreds of people and we know the impact that events have on the environment.

Sustainability in events has become a paramount concern and the rising trend of incorporating sustainable measures into event planning is the answer to this concern and a commitment to reduce the ecological impact while maximizing the benefits.

With this mind, the IFW 2026 organizing committee is working for a green-oriented event

International recognized best practices based on the quality standard UNI20121 will be adopted to respect and contribute positively to environment, society, and economy.

Main goals will include economic sustainaibility prioritising local vendors to support local economy and community, environmental sustainability reducing as much as possible the event ecological footprint and, of course, social sustainability, and accessibility ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees.

SUSTAINABLE ACTIONS UNDERWAY

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

Responsible Paper Use
The conference organisation follows a responsible paper use philosophy, prioritising digital solutions — such as a digital event platform for managing registrations and paper submissions, a website and web app, electronic newsletters, etc. — to minimise the use of paper both before and during the event.
The production of printed materials such as flyers, brochures and invitations in promotional activities is limited to a reusable save-the-date bookmark, name badges and the final conference programme. These will be distributed at the conference and printed on FSC-certified paper (FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an organisation that promotes sustainable forestry practices worldwide). Conference proceedings will be published in digital format only and made available online

Catering services
All refreshments at the conference centre, as well as the social dinner, will aim to showcase local culinary traditions, using ingredients sourced from the territory and its local producers.
Catering will be based on a plastic-free system using crockery that is either reusable or made with Mater-Bi (a biodegradable and compostable bioplastic).

Urban mobility
The conference venue is located close to the city centre, easily reachable from the main railway stations by subway, bus or tramway with a few minutes’ ride. The local international airport is connected to the railway stations in about 30 minutes by train.
Many hotels are available at walking distance or easily reachable by public transportation (subway, bus and tramway lines).
The venue of the social dinner, the MAUTO National Car Museum, can be reached with a 10-minutes’ walk from the conference venue.
Discounted fares for local public transport are also available through the Torino Congress Card, offered at a special rate for conference attendees

Local vendors
All vendors, from caterers to technical equipment suppliers, have been locally selected to foster local economy and reduce the impact of product transportation.

Sustainable giveaways and reusable materials
Conference bags and lanyards will be made entirely from recycled PET.
Plastic badge holders will be collected at the end of the conference and reused at future events.
All structures used for signage and exhibition purposes (e.g. signs, shell scheme booths, poster boards) provided by the organisation are made of reusable materials

Waste recycling
A correct recycling throughout the event will be ensured by providing clearly marked recycling bins all over the conference centre premises.

General conference management activities
The conference management company holds ISO 20121 certification, the international standard for sustainable event management.
Sustainable best practices — such as a paperless policy and the use of fully digitalised systems for pre-event activities - have been adopted throughout all phases of the organisation

Emission calculation and compensation

In addition to the efforts made to mitigate the conference's environmental impact, a collaboration was developed with U2Y, a technical partner specialised in supporting companies and institutions in their sustainability initiatives. The main goal of this partnership is to calculate the conference's gas emissions and partially offset them through internationally certified projects

SOCIAL RESPONSABILITY ACTIONS

Showcasing the host city and its cultural heritage

Among the conference goals, in cooperation with the local Convention Bureau Turismo Torino, is the promotion of the host city and its region.
We aim to give conference attendees the opportunity, during their stay, to discover the city's tourist and cultural attractions.
To this end, social events will be held at some of the city's main tourist venues, such as the stunning National Car Museum and the fascinating riverside area.
The conference venue itself was once the city's first Fiat car factory. Fully renovated in the 1990s by the renowned architect Renzo Piano, it has preserved its historic features while becoming a remarkable example of modern architecture.
The Torino Congress Card, offering free access to two museums and discounted fares on public transport, is available through the local Convention Bureau at a special rate for conference attendees.

Food waste reduction
The conference will join the national programme Food for Good, which aims to reduce food waste at conferences and congresses by donating unconsumed food to local charities through the non-profit organisation Banco Alimentare.

Inclusion
The conference has offered reduced registration fees for students, encouraging the participation of young researchers in international scientific conferences.
Reduced registration fees have also been granted to attendees from low-income countries.

Accessibility
Accessibility is ensured in all conference areas.
In order to improve online contents accessibility, a specific plugin that provides website visitors with the ability to adjust settings according to their needs was installed on the conference website.

Compliance with applicable laws
Health and safety at work is among the conference organisation's priorities. All on-site activities were carried out in strict compliance with local laws and regulations.
Attendees' personal data were processed in full compliance with current privacy regulations (EU GDPR 2016/679)

Stay tuned and go green!
